Division in PDP as Ekeremadu reportedly stays away from Atiku’s campaign

- Senator Ike Ekweremadu has reportedly been inactive in the Atiku campaign

- The deputy Senate president was not reportedly given an active role to play

- An associate of Ekweremadu said it was wrong that he has not been given key roles in the campaign

The deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu has reportedly stayed away from the presidential campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a result of the allegation that he was not given an active role in Atiku Abubakar’s campaign.

The Punch reports that this caused division within the party although the party has denied the allegation by the All Progressives Congress that some south east governors were working for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election.

An associate of Ekweremadu who reportedly spoke on the condition of anonymity claimed the party did not give him a specific role and described it as wrong.

He said: “The Deputy Senate President was not given any specific assignment in the Atiku Presidential Campaign Council, which I think is wrong. It is not proper that the PDP did not assign any national role to him in its presidential campaign.

“Ekweremadu was not even carried along when the PDP Presidential Campaign Council was constituted; he had no input at all. He also learnt of the composition, like other Nigerians, through the media. If Ekweremadu had not remained in the party, I doubt whether there would be any PDP to return to after the Supreme Court verdict that sacked the erstwhile national executive.

“It is wrong to say that he should campaign alongside his principal who is the director-general of the campaign council (Dr Saraki). In any case, Ekweremadu was in Gombe State to campaign for Atiku. He is currently concentrating on the South-East, which is his own constituency. He is specifically focusing on how to deliver the South-East region.”

The source however said the governors were focusing on their own elections.

He said: “The truth of the matter is that the governors are also focusing on their own re-election. They will definitely show their power when the campaigns move to the South-East region.

“Is it when the governors take flights to Sokoto and Bauchi for campaign rallies that will show Nigerians that they are working for Atiku?”

Meanwhile, following a visit to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, the leadership of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Wing has denied endorsing President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term, during the visit.

Some individuals and other Igbo youth groups had accused the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Wing of working against the interest of Ndigbo, Vanguard reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the leadership, however, explained that it did not endorse the president, saying that its visit to Aso Rock was “conceived out of our desire to contribute to the ongoing national discourse aimed at getting the best for Ndigbo in the forthcoming election aimed at getting the best for Ndigbo in the forthcoming elections.”
