The declaration, that is now a customary part of the annual New Years' Service with the president of Christ Embassy (also known as Loveworld), was followed with meaningful explanation on the significance of the word 'light'.

The event was attended by many officials, including the former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, as well as the Honorable Solomon Dalong, Nigerian Minister of Sport.

The Loveworld president revealed the message behind the new theme of 2019, explaining the various different elements of lights. In his address he said:

“There are different kinds of lights. Some are for illuminations, some are for leadership, guidance, some are for empowerment some are for signs and wonders, signs and seasons. What’s about to happen through the church of Jesus Christ, the bible tells us as the days get closer and closer to the return of Jesus Christ, gross darkness will cover the earths, he says thick darkness will cover the earths. He’s talking about spiritual darkness - but in the midst of this your light will so shine. The darker the darkness the more brightly you shine”.

This message can certainly apply to the new FALA winners who have indeed been illuminating the darkest parts of Africa with a big bright torch of hope. The 10 winners were all lauded by both Pastor Chris, and the former Nigerian president with a fair financial grant. In addition, each winner received the title of Ambassador of the Future Africa Leaders Foundation (FALF).

There were many notable contenders. Among them, Deliwe Makata, the 23-year-old Malawian. Makata is the executive director of Women Inspire, an empowerment and capacity building network for girls and young women in the country.

The organization works in areas human rights, social leadership, education and character development by supporting girls and young women and giving them a voice in society at large.

On her organization and her goals, Makata has expressed her desire to empower woman, while at the same time acknowledging the big differences between the genders “In my understanding of the nature of the woman, I do not see the need to fight to be just like the man. We are different, in our own ways. I believe we are strong, yet, vulnerable. We can dominate, be influential and still show the beauty in submission,”

Another deserving candidate is Chris Iyama, the 24-year-old United Nations Ambassador for World Peace. As founder and Executive Director for the Centre for youth participation and advocacy in Africa (CYPAAFRICA) he has prompted the youth politics in and encouraged kids to participate in political and judiciary processes. In 2018 he helped run the #TheNotTooYoungToRun campaign that facilitated the passing of a constitutional amendment bill to reduce the voting age limit in Nigeria.

Yet, the one who rose to the top as 'Star Prize Winner' of the Future Africa Leaders Award of 2018, was Isaiah Deng. Born in South Sudan, Deng has spent many of his young years promoting education and sustainable development. Deng was awarded for his exceptional efforts in the advancement education. With Sudan ravaged by years of civil war thousands of children have been left uneducated and stuck in a cycle of poverty. To put an end to this, Deng implemented a multiple training centers and education seminars to impart knowledge on the youth, thus empowering them with knowledge for a better and brighter future.

His training program 'Acquire Skills for Your Future', a self-started institution, has given computer skills and inspired thousands of young individuals on the power of sustainable development and nation building.

Plenty of other nominees deserve mention: Ngassa Merlin worked with at risk youth and established entrepreneurial programs; Yusuph Nyamuhanga developed a number of campaigns to create awareness for sickle cell foundations; Maame Yaa Addae-Mensah from Ghana developed a communication device for the deaf and blind and Taonga Ngoma carried out several initiatives including seminars for orphans.

These initiatives are also an integral part of the UN created plan entitled, 'Sustainable Development Goals', a blueprint for social and economic advancement created by the UN that "promote economic growth and addresses a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection."

These young hopefuls are clearly steering the continent of Africa into a new direction, giving a positive start to the theme of 'Lights' and bidding the year of Supernatural a farewell.
