2019 polls: PDP candidates in northern Nigeria openly canvassing for president’s re-election - Buhari's group

- The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has described President Muhammadu Buhari as open minded as the 2019 elections approaches

- The BMO was reacting to Buhari's meeting with Ogun state gubernatorial candidate of Allied Peoples Movement, Adekunle Akinlade

- The group also posited that several opposition figures were running their campaign with posters bearing Buhari’s image

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has hailed what it calls President Muhammadu Buhari open-mindedness as the 2019 general elections approaches.

The BMO was reacting to Buhari's recent meeting with Ogun state gubernatorial candidate of Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Adekunle Akinlade alongside Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

Amosun is backing the APM candidate against the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the state, prompting some supporters of the party to accuse Buhari of endorsing the governor's anti-party activities.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 8, by its chairman, Niyi Akinsiju and secretary, Cassidy Madueke, the BMO said that the meeting was not necessarily a sign of President Buhari’s endorsement of the APM candidate.

Akinsiju said President Buhari had before now raised the hand of APC candidate, Dapo Abiodun, as his preferred candidate during a recent visit alongside former Ogun state governor, Olusegun Osoba.

Part of the statement read “We are aware of some disquiet among APC members on seeing the picture of the president with Governor Amosun and the APM candidate on the front page of national dailies after the weekend meeting at the Presidential Villa.

“But just as the presidency has made it clear that the president would only back APC candidates, we don’t see the meeting as a contradiction of the stance.

“It in fact shows the acceptability that President Buhari enjoys across party lines as opposed to the recent stage-managed endorsement of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar by insignificant political parties and politicians with no real electoral value.’’

The BMO noted that a sign of the president’s wide acceptability was the fact that PDP governorship and National Assembly candidates in several parts of the country were running their campaign with posters bearing Buhari’s image.

“It is a known fact that there is no living politician with the cult-like followership and support Buhari has in some parts of the country as a result of his legendary integrity.

“It is not a surprise that several PDP candidates in northern Nigeria have been openly canvassing for the president’s re-election,” the group stated.

The pro-Buhari group pointed out that the trend of support for President Buhari among PDP leaders began a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile, a former deputy national publicity secretary of the APC, Comrade Timi Frank, has stated that the recent development where armed military personnel attacked offices of Daily Trust Newspapers has shown how desperate the current administration is.

According to Comrade Frank, both media and private citizens have lost their right to publish or express themselves under President Muhammadu Buhari' administration.

He, however, called on Nigerians to take opportunity of the forthcoming elections to put an end to the dictatorial tendencies of the APC government in Nigeria.
