She promoted African culture - Buhari says as he mourns late Sophie Oluwole

- President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, December 24, sent his condolences to the family of late Professor Sophie Oluwole

- In a recent statement, the president said that the deceased will always be remembered for promoting African culture and history

- Buhari urged all who mourn the professor to carry on from where she left off in the advocacy for native consciousness and self-redefinition

President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a message of condolences bereaved family of late Professor Sophie Oluwole, a topmost philosopher and Nigeria’s first female doctorate degree holder in philosophy, Nigerian Tribune reports.

The president, in a statement issued by Femi Adesina, his special adviser to the presidency on media and publicity on Monday, December 24, joined members of the family, the academia and other close associates in mourning the vibrant philosopher.

Late Sophie proved to the world through her teaching enshrined in Yoruba culture, history and worldview, that African traditions have values that propagate democracy, equity and justice.

Buhari in the statement said that the deceased will be honoured and remembered for her commitment and skill in spreading the word about the good in promoting African tradition, culture, knowledge and languages.

He urged all who mourn her to honour her memory by carrying on from where she left off in her zest to advocate native consciousness, skills and discipline for self-redefinition.

The president prayed that God should grant her eternal give her family, friends and well-wishers the fortitude to bear the great loss.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the late professor was on Monday, December 24, reported dead. Sophie was a practitioner of Yoruba philosophy, a way of thinking which originates from the southwestern region in the country.

The late amazon, who died at age 82, was an indigene of Ondo, having been born in the Igbara-Oke, area of the state in 1936. As a feminist, she was famous for being very outspoken about the role of women in both global and African philosophy.
