Ruthless PSG demolish Red Star Belgrade to seal Champions League last 16 spot

- French champions Paris Saint-Germain have qualified for the Champions League last 16

- PSG sealed a spot in the last 16 after topping Group C with 11 points

- They defeated Serbian side, Red Star Belgrade, in their last Group C match

Brazil star Neymar and his counterpart, Edinson Cavani, on Tuesday night, December 11, combined perfectly to inspire Paris Saint-Germain to a 4-1 victory over Red Star Belgrade to book a spot in the last 16 of the Champions League at Rajko Mitić Stadium.

The French champions went into the Group C clash away from home in pursuit of maximum points to ensure their qualification to the next stage of the European competition.

Group C has been tight throughout the group stages of the Champions League, but PSG gave themselves a springboard for qualification thanks to a 2-1 home victory over Liverpool at Parc des Princes.

The trip to Serbia was conceived to be a difficult one for Thomas Tuchel's men as both Napoli and Liverpool failed to win against Red Star Belgrade away.

However, PSG went on to dominated proceedings at Rajko Mitić Stadium during the Tuesday clash, with the home side struggling to settle into the match in the opening exchanges.

Edinson Cavani opened the scoring for the visitors within just ten minutes of game play, with the Uruguayan tapping home calmly from Kylian Mbappe's cross.

Neymar doubled PSG's lead in the 40th minute, dribbling past Red Star's defense before netting a sensational goal to make it 2-0 at half-time.

Upon the resumption of the second half, the hosts pulled one back via Marko Gobeljić who side-footed to the back of the net in the 56th minute to give the home fans a glimmer of hope.

However, Brazilian defender Marquinhos extended PSG's lead in the 74th minute before Kylian Mbappe scored at stoppage time to put the game beyond Red Star as the French side went on to seal a spot in the last 16.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Kylian Mbappe and Neymar were among top PSG squad members on board, as French Ligue 1 champions made their way to Belgrade, ahead of Tuesday’s Group C cracker against Red Star.

Frenchman Mbappe posted pictures of PSG teammates in high spirit as squad members made their away to the aircraft on Monday afternoon.

Mbappe, also uploaded a selfie of him alongside veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon even as he tried to cover his new silver coloured hair with a cap.
