Northern traditional rulers raise alarm over insecurity ahead of 2019 elections

- The Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC) say the security challenges in the country is rising to a catastrophic level

- The council urges the federal government and the security agencies to tackle the issue insecurity in parts of the country

- The northern rulers identify the unavailability of adequate grazing reserves and livestock routes as a major cause of the incessant farmers- herders conflict

Northern traditional rulers have warned that the rising security challenges in the country may seriously affect the conduct of the 2019 general elections.

Daily Trust reports that the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council (NTRC) in a communique raised concerns that the security challenges in the country was rising to a catastrophic level and urged the federal government and the security agencies to tackle the issue.

“The rising wave of kidnapping and banditry, rising farmers-herders’ conflicts, resurgence of insurgency and other forms of criminalities that may seriously affect the conduct of the 2019 elections,” the council stated at the end of its fifth general assembly, signed by its coordinating committee’s chairman and Emir of Gummi Justice Lawal Hassan.

The council said the unavailability of adequate grazing reserves and livestock routes was the main cause of the incessant farmers- herders conflict.

It advocated for the provision of grazing reserves and livestock routes that should be gazetted and protected.

Meanwhile ahead of 2019 general elections, politicians in Nigeria have been urged to shun acts capable of causing tension in the country.

The call was made on Wednesday, December 19, by traditional rulers of the 19 northern states at the fifth general assembly of the northern traditional rulers Council in Kaduna state.

The meeting tagged ‘Pervasive Insecurity In An Election Year; Prospects And Challenges’, was also attended by the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Yakubu Mahmood, Channels TV.
