- Festus Keyamo stated that President Buhari's reasons for not assenting to the bill were genuine
- Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu earlier said the president’s decision to decline assent to bill is a prove of an active leadership
Festus Keyamo, the director general of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, on Sunday, December 9, argued that the reasons the president gave for not assenting to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, were genuine.
Keyamo while reacting to the rejection of the bill accused the National Assembly of putting their interests over that of Nigerians.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics said: “I want to say clearly to Nigerians that we got to this point because of the self-serving nature of the National Assembly.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the immediate past special assistant to President Buhari on justice reform, Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu said the president’s decision to decline assent to Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2018 is a prove of an active leadership.
Ibekaku-Nwagwu who made this known in Abuja on Sunday, December 9, stated that president’s decision also saved INEC from a booby trap that would have put the commission in a very tight situation.
She said: “The decision also saved INEC from a booby trap that would have put the commission in a very tight situation. Amending rules that would be applied to the conduct of an election that is barely two months away is a deliberate attempt unconsciously or consciously to raise the stake very high for INEC to meet up with.

“Signing the Bill would have also required INEC reviewing higher its budget for the conduct of the election so that it can accommodate the new requirements by the stipulations of the amended act, which were primarily new electronic requirements that must be acquired before the elections.''
In a development, President Buhari declined assent to the bill due to “some drafting issues” that remain unaddressed following the prior revisions to the bill.
Senator Ita Enang, the senior special assistant to the president on National Assembly matters (Senate), made this known in a statement in Abuja on Monday, September 3.
The presidential aide said that already, the president had communicated his position to the Senate and the House of Representatives on August 30.
