The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has decried the perennial cases of corruption in Nigeria, saying Nigerians bear the brunt most when corrupt public office holders enrich themselves at the expense of others.

According to EFCC’s director of operations, Muhammed Abba, the citizens bear the brunt most when funds meant for the provision of public services such as healthcare, infrastructure, education among other are stolen, Vanguard reports.

Legit.ng gathers that Abba spoke at a road walk against corruption organised by the commission to commemorate the 2018 World Anti-Corruption Day.

He said: “Indeed, no country is immune to corruption, which is a cancer literally destroying the innards of most countries of the world. Unarguably, corruption is a serious crime that can undermine the socio-economic development of any country in the world.

“When the corrupt steal funds that are earmarked for the provision of public services such as healthcare, infrastructure, education et al, it is you and me, the ordinary citizens who bear the brunt most.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it recorded over 172 convictions from January till October 22, 2018.

The acting chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Magu, stated this in Gombe on Monday, October 22.

Magu, who said this at an event to mobilise the people to take ownership of the fight against corruption, added: "I speak, EFCC has recorded over 172 convictions since the beginning of the year and we expect the figure to improve significantly before the end of 2018.”

The chairman emphasised that every Nigerian should take ownership of the fight against corruption, adding that “this is the right time to act to stem the tide of corruption as the 2019 general elections approach."

He said: “As we move closer to the general elections where Nigerians will vote for the present government or a new leadership to take control of governance, it is time that we all must be vigilant.

“We all must be careful as citizens to ensure that only people with proven records of integrity are elected into offices."

Magu, therefore, called on Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), religious organisations, traditional leaders to help in sensitising voters to vote right and not to compromise.
