The committee on electoral and political matters of the House of Representatives, on Thursday, November 29, advised residents of the south east to shun agitations by pro-Biafra activists for the boycott of 2019 general election.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chukwuemeka Ujam, who led a four-man team of the committee on an over-sight visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Enugu state, spoke in reaction to calls by some pro-Biafra groups for residents to boycott the election.
Ujam, who is represents Nkanu East/Nkanu West federal constituency, urged the people residing in the south east to participate actively in the election as a measure of enthroning good governance through which they can demand for redress on their perceived marginalisation.

The lawmaker said the activities of the pro-Biafra groups were major setbacks in the various political efforts to let south east residents vote massively in previous elections so that their votes could count.
Ujam pleaded with the residents of the south east “exhibit total sense of maturity by ignoring such calls.”
He said there would be sensitisation and enlightenment campaigns to tackle voters’ aparthy.
According to Ujam, the visit was to ascertain INEC’s level of preparedness ahead of the 2019 elections, assuring that the committee would tackle all issues raised by principal staff of the commission in the state.
The report said the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Enugu state, Emeka Ononamadu, appraised the result of the just-concluded Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in as very encouraging.
According to him, INEC registered over 549,326 new voters during the exercise, but harped on the cancerous problem of `voters’ apathy’ in the south east based on Biafra sentiments as a source of worry.

The REC listed some of the internal problems facing the commission in the state to include lack of water and inconsistent power supply.
Legit.ng earlier reported that INEC recently said except for the delay in the passage of the election budget by the National Assembly, it is ready to conduct the 2019 general elections.
The report said that the national commissioner of publicity, INEC, Solomon Soyebi, made the statement on Sunday, September 9, during an appearance on the station.
