We have waited for 3 years, it is time to begin Diezani’s extradition process - Magu tells UK authorities

- EFCC acting chairman has met with the UK anti-crime agency over recovery of Nigeria’s assets stolen and domiciled in the country

- The EFCC boss also announced in the meeting his commission’s move to begin Diezani’s extradition process

In a bid to kick-start the process of extraditing a former minister of petroleum resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has reportedly met with National Crime Agency in the United Kingdom.

The EFCC said in a statement that Magu met with the UK official on Thursday, November 22, to also discuss the efforts of the commission in the recovery of all ill-gotten assets domiciled in foreign jurisdiction by Nigeria’s Politically Exposed Persons, The Punch reports.

The statement read in part: “Outside the recovery of assets, the EFCC boss in the course of the high power meeting with officials of the NCA will also present the commission’s position on ways to fast-track the extradition of all PEPs who have found safe havens in foreign jurisdiction."

Magu had explained why the anti-graft agency is bent on extraditing all PEPs.

“For instance, speaking on the former minister of petroleum resources, Deziani Alison-Madueke, whose process of extradition from the UK has commenced, Magu explained that having waited for three years, the Nigerian government believes that it is time to initiate the extradition process,” the statement added.

The EFCC said apart from Diezani, there were several other politically exposed persons who have fled the country 2015 when the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari came on board in May 2015.

Recall that in 2017, a Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the final forfeiture of N7.6 billion alleged loot recovered by the anti-graft commission from Diezani to the federal government.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Samuel Omotoso, a legislator in the Ekiti state House of Assembly, said that a two-storey building sealed by the EFCC at Okesa Market belongs to him.

The lawmaker described the conduct of the EFCC as harassment and political infringement on his property.

He claimed the anti-graft agency’s action was as a result of his loyalty to Fayose, The Punch reports.

“This attempt to malign my name by EFCC by linking my family property to Ayo Fayose is political and was done in clear bad faith.

“A simple check at the land registry would have put paid to this unnecessary exercise and the accompanying media sensation, as all documents relating to the joint ownership of the said property by my family is in the public domain,” Omotoso said.
