Treasure hunter: Man discovers over N2 billion in storage unit bought for N182,000 (photos)

Indeed, not all treasure hunting exercises have to happen on the sea and not all pirates have to wear a red look or have a one eyed parch attached to the face. The story of a particular man who bought a second hand storage unit for less money than he could have thought of and still went on to find more cash than he could ever have imagined very much makes this clear.

The said man had bought a storage unit at the hands of Dan Dotson, a popular auctioneer and TV host of a show ironically called Storage Wars. He bought it for a sum of 390 pounds which is an equivalent of about N182,000.

After a while, Dan Dotson was approached by an Asian woman who had stumbled into him at a charity event. The woman in question nagged to talk to the TV host about a particular issue. Upon getting his attention, she took his mind back to the storage unit and the buyer

Then, she went on to tell him that her husband works with the buyer of the storage unit. As it so turns out, the man who had bought the unit opened it only to find a safe inside.

They made attempt to open the safe a first time but to no avail. Upon a second trial, it was opened and within it, a sum of 5.8 million pounds was found. This is way over N2 billion.

Now, Dan who was extremely surprised at this piece of detail took to his Twitter handle to talk about the old Asian woman and how she bumped into him at a party. But, of course, he especially talked about the little secret she had divulged to him.

What happens afterwards is even more thrilling. Dan Dotson who had aired the discovery on social media prompted the original owners of the storage unit to act. With an attorney representing them, they called the buyer of the unit in order to bargain with him.

He was offered a sum of $600,000 which is about N214 million naira. The said treasure hunter rejected the money and held on to the windfall he had so gotten. Then, the original owners bargained again, this time offering the person 1.2 million dollars which is an equivalent of over N436 million naira.

The buyer of the storage unit which, in this case, can be likened to a treasure chest has gone on to accept this irresistible amount with the promise to return the rest of the money.

As to how the entire money ended up in the storage unit in the first place, nobody knows not even Dan Dotson and his wife Laura who sold off the gadget. It has been speculated that the owner of the money who hid it there ran into some major issues that prevented him from making good use of his or her wealth.
