Surveyors clear air over suspect allegedly involved in Alkali's killing

- The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors says none of its members was involved in the kidnapping and subsequent killing of retired General Idris Alkali

- One Chuwang Istifanus Stephen, who was said to be a surveyor, was declared wanted alongside seven others

- The union says Stephen's name could not be found in its register, adding that the union does not know him

Following the disappearance and subsequent killing of a former chief of administration in the Nigerian Army, General Idris Alkali (retd), the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors has said none of its members was involved that heinous crime.

The denial was made in Jos on Wednesday, November 14, by the chairman of the union in Plateau state, Dr Bitrus Dang.

Dang said the name of one of the eight suspects recently declared wanted by the police, Chuwang Istifanus Stephen, who was said to be a surveyor, could not be found in the union's register, Punch reports.

Legit.ng recalls that soldiers recently recovered the lifeless body of the retired general from an abandoned well in the Jos South local government area of the state.

Dang said: ‘’It is unfortunate that such a thing happened. But I would want to say that the name so mentioned is not one of us. We have registers. We have members that are fully registered. Well, we don’t know how they got their information but we want to tell them that he is not a surveyor.

"He has not been one of us. May be, he is one of those land speculators or those that transact business on land but he is not a member of the Institution of Surveyors.

"When somebody measures land, they call them surveyors. Well, he is not a surveyor, even in the survey practice, if you are not registered, you are not expected to bear the name, Surveyor. So, as far as we are concerned, we do not know him as a member of the Institution of Surveyors in Plateau state.’’
