Some lawmakers in the Ondo state House of Assembly, who are reportedly on the run for fear of harm, have insisted that the impeachment of the speaker of the House, Bamidele Oloyelogun, and his deputy, Iroju Ogundeji, remained irreversible, despite alleged threats they have received.

The Punch reports that 11 members of the group of 18 lawmakers, told journalists in Ibadan, Oyo state, on Monday, November 12, that any parliamentary proceeding held by the ousted speaker and his deputy is an illegal process.

The group led by their new speaker, Olamide George, accused the Ondo state governor of backing a minority group of lawmakers led by the impeached speaker.

The legislators said the former speaker and his deputy were impeached over alleged gross misconduct, financial recklessness, abuse of power and incompetence in running the affairs of the assembly.

“We learnt that the minority group led by the ousted speaker and deputy held a sitting today (Monday). It is laughable to hear that the impeached and suspended speaker could preside over an assembly,” George said.

“All these illegal activities point towards the governor. We learnt they went to the assembly with thugs today and chased out those working at the assembly. This is barbaric.

“It is disheartening that a governor, who is also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria could aid such acts. He is supposed to be a promoter of the rule of law. I think he should demonstrate this by allowing the assembly to operate independently.”

The lawmakers said the impeachment of the former speaker of the assembly and his deputy, was done to change the unpleasant leadership in the assembly.

Meanwhile, the embattled speaker of Ondo state House of assembly Bamidele Oloyeloogun has called his impeachment by 18 members of the assembly as unconstitutional.

The ousted speaker who disclosed this while addressing a news conference in Akure said the necessary procedure was not followed by those who carried out the impeachment, TVC news reports.

He alleged that signatures of two of the lawmakers were forged, and urged the police to probe the alleged falsification.
