Group accuses EFCC of biased investigation over Emmanuel’s government

- A socio-economic group said Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is lopsided in its investigation about Akwa Ibom state government

- The Akwa Ibom Media Advocates group said the EFCC should probe both the past and present governments of the state

- The group, however, urged the anti-graft agency to be unbiased in all its efforts in order to leave a lasting legacy for posterity

A socio-economic group, Akwa Ibom Media Advocates, on Thursday, November 15, slammed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for making attempt to wreck the administration of governor Udom Emmanuel.

The Punch reports that group in a statement wondered why the EFCC constrained its investigative activities in Akwa Ibom state to Emmanuel’s administration without considering the governor’s predecessor, Godswill Akpabio.

It was learnt that the AMA particularly condemned a newspapers’ publication by the EFCC on its investigative activities in Akwa Ibom state.

The group said: “We did not react to the first report on the investigation of the accounts of the state government in August as we thought that it could have been a mistake.

“However, the latest report clearly indicates an agenda… and we believe that the commission has fully delved into the political arena and is carrying out a partisan agenda aimed at destabilising the state government.

“It is trite that the power to investigate the finances of a state government is domiciled in the state House of Assembly and this is a fact that has been proved by the courts.”

Reminding the anti-graft agency of the purpose for which it was crated, the AMA advised the EFCC to “be unbiased in all its efforts in order to leave a lasting legacy for posterity.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the following allegations of corruption, EFCC was said to be probing some Akwa Ibom state officials for alleged withdrawal of N6.5billion in cash from an imprest account.

The cash was said to have been diverted from a derivation account to the imprest account of the ministry of justice/ office of the accountant-general in the state.

It was reported that the anti graft agency discovered that the allocation was gradually withdrawn in cash for “unknown purposes.”

The news outlet reported that a top source, who is privy to ongoing investigation, said: “The ongoing investigation of Akwa Ibom state has led to the uncovering of how another N6.5billion was withdrawn in cash in tranches for unspecified purposes.''
