Drama in court as UNIJOS insists lawmaker forged its certificate

- The registrar of the University of Jos, Monday Danjem, has insisted before a high court, that a Plateau state lawmaker, Ibrahim Baba Hassan, forged the institution’s certificate

- He said no certificate had been issued to the lawmaker because he did not graduate, having failed six courses

- The defense counsel, however, argued that the registrar’s oral evidence was not enough to substantiate his claims on the status of the certificate

The trial of a member of the Plateau state House of Assembly, Ibrahim Baba Hassan, over alleged certificate forgery, continued on Thursday, November 29, at the Federal High Court in Jos.

The registrar of the University of Jos, Monday Danjem, who was the first prosecution witness, insisted that Baba Hassan, who represents Jos North, forged the Diploma Certificate which he claimed the university issued to him, and which he presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the general elections in 2015, Punch reports.

Legit.ng gathers that during his cross-examination by the defence counsel, Solomon Umoh (SAN), Danjem told the court that he could not verify a convocation booklet of graduands between 1996 and 2002 containing the lawmaker’s name which the defense counsel showed to him and insisted was published by the university.

He said: “My Lord, we have the records that Mr Ibrahim Baba Hassan enrolled for a Diploma in Business Administration in the university but he did not graduate because he failed six courses. And because of that, no certificate was issued to him.”

The defense counsel, however, argued that the registrar’s oral evidence was not enough to substantiate his claims on the status of the certificate. He further urged the court to reject Danjem’s statement for lack of records to back up his claims.

In a similar development, Legit.ng previously reported that three members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun state, dragged the party and its governorship candidate in the September 22 governorship election, Senator Ademola Adeleke, to court for allegedly contesting the PDP governorship primary election with a fake certificate.

The plaintiffs sought Adeleke’s disqualification from the governorship election claiming that he submitted fake certificates to secure clearance for the PDP primary.
