Check out 4 players Manchester United should sell in January

- The Red Devils seriously need to overhaul their team to maintain their big team status

- They have not been convincing so far this term despite having one of the best managers in charge of the team

- Jones, Herrera, Valencia and Darmian are no longer needed at Old Trafford and should be offloaded from the squad

Manchester United's struggles continue this season following their 3-1 defeat to city rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Red Devils faced the title holders without their midfielder Paul Pogba who picked up an injury towards the clash.

However, much has been made of the strained relationship between Jose Mourinho and Ed Woodward at Old Trafford.

One thing is clear – there are a number of big transfer flops during their reign and we identify the 4 players United should urgently look to sell.

Phil Jones

Title winning sides generally boast of 2 world class center-backs in their ranks, but Phil Jones would not make the cut in that regard.

The England defender is known for being aggressive but that often brings rashness to his game.

Aside from the mistake in his locker, Jones also has a poor injury record and can’t be consistently relied upon.

Being British with international experience and aged only 26, the club could still salvage a respectable transfer fee if he is sold soon.

Matteo Darmian

Darmian never seemed a good fit at Old Trafford. The club have traditions of swashbuckling football and positive, marauding full-backs but the Italian doesn’t fit that profile.

Although he boasts defensive solidity, the right-back lacks the pace and attacking threat the club requires.

Ander Herrera

Many United fans love the Spaniard’s attitude in training and on the pitch. However, he’s always seemed more of a decent squad option than a regular starter.

Herrera’s versatility seems to satisfy the old adage – a jack of all trades, master of none.

Used as a holding midfielder, an attacking midfielder and even at center-back, it’s clear the manager doesn’t have the confidence in him to fulfill one role in the midfield.

With age slowly catching up to him, United may be wise to offload him while he still retains reasonable market value.

Antonio Valencia

The Ecuadorian has been a tremendous servant to the club during his time there. He seemed destined for the exit door a few seasons ago but then re-invented himself as a right-back.

He still boasts power and a good yard of pace but lacks the dynamism an elite team requires.

At 33, he’ll only get slower and when you compare him to the world-class fullbacks Manchester City have, the gulf in quality is clear.

His exit could help United recoup a decent transfer fee and decrease the wage bill, while affording Diego Dalot an opportunity to stake his claim as the first choice right-back.
