Legit.ng’s Editor-in-Chief Bayo Olupohunda honoured at West Africa Media Excellence Awards

The editor-in-chief of Legit.ng, Nigeria’s biggest online news publisher, Bayo Olupohunda was honoured at West Africa Media Excellence Awards where he emerged runner-up in the health reporting category.

The award in its second year attracted over 600 entries, shortlisted to 18, from West African journalists.

The 18 finalists competed in seven categories.

Olupohunda was nominated for the awards based on his investigative story on the menace of maternal mortality in Nigeria.

The investigative story was structured in two parts. In the first part, the front line journalist and new media expert spoke to families who have been victims of maternal deaths and examined why many more Nigerian women are dying during childbirth.

In the second part, he examined the depressing statistics of maternal deaths, the role of traditional birth attendants and how corruption and poor health care system fuel maternal deaths in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, three Nigerian journalists emerged winners of their categories at the event held in Accra on Saturday. Ghanaian journalists also had a field day with three winners.

Each of the winners was presented certificates, plaques, $500 cash prize and availed other opportunities.

For the biggest prize of the night, Manasseh Azure Awuni was announced as West Africa Journalist of the Year with the prize tag of $2, 000.
