- Ike Ekweremadu, the deputy senate president, dissuades leaders in the southeast from rejecting Peter Obi’s nomination as the vice-presidential candidate of the PDP

- Ekweremadu says the major task now is to get the opposition party back to power and save the country from what he called a downward spiral

- Osita Okechukwu, the director general of the voice of Nigeria (VON) urges Nigerians not to be swayed by the promises made by Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate

Ike Ekweremadu, the deputy senate president has called on leaders in the southeast zone to support the choice of Peter Obi as the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The Cable reports that Ekweremadu’s call to the southeast leaders followed a complaint by the group that they were not properly consulted before Obi, a former governor of Anambra state, was chosen for the position.

The deputy senate president at a meeting with southeast political leaders, comprising the zone’s PDP governors, national assembly caucus, board of trustee members and other party leaders convinced the group not to reject Obi’s nomination.

A party leader who attended the meeting said Ekweremadu, who was one of those considered by Atiku Abubakar as running mate in the 2019 presidential election, urged the southeast leaders to back Obi.

Ekweremadu reminded us that the major task now is to get the PDP back to power and save the country from its downward spiral,” the insider told The Cable.

“He even joked that it wouldn’t matter if Atiku picked a northerner as his running mate, as long as it would get the repressive government of Buhari out of power.”

“Although the meeting was convened with the agenda of rejecting Obi’s nomination, the south-east leaders were reportedly shocked by Ekweremadu’s position.

“You cannot weep more than the bereaved. We thought we were fighting for him, but he said we should allow Obi be. We were shocked by his sportsmanship."

Meanwhile, Osita Okechukwu, the director general of the voice of Nigeria (VON), has urged people of the southeast and Nigerians not to be deceived by the campaign promises made by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

Okechukwu on Sunday, October 14, in Enugu, told reporters that the restructuring and quick fix measures promised by Atiku so far truly glitters but are not gold. He likened the Atiku/Obi ticket to a one chance bus and urged Nigerians not to be swayed by the euphoria that has greeted their emergence, The Tribune reports.

The director general of the voice of Nigeria said it was better to reelect Buhari who he said had already began the silent restructuring of Nigeria through several projects that will enhance economic prosperity.
