Theresa May's visit to Nigeria is not an endorsement for Buhari or any candidate - British High Commission

- The British High Commission in Nigeria speaks on the recent visit of the British Prime Minister, Theresa May,

- It said the prime minister coming to Nigeria is not an endorsement of President Buhari or any other candidate

- The commission added that the British government does not have a preferred candidate for the 2019 election

Following the recent visit of the British prime minister, Theresa May, the British High Commission in Nigeria said her coming is not an endorsement of President Muhammadu Buhari or any other candidate.

In a report by Sahara Reporters, Laura Beaufils, the British deputy high commissioner to Nigeria, stated this in her address at an interactive session organised for journalists by the commission in Lagos on Friday, September 14.

Laura also restated the UK government’s commitment to spending £47.4 million on Deepening Democracy in Nigeria Programme Phase 2 (DDiN2).

The British deputy high commissioner speaking on UK’s role in deepening democracy in partnership with Nigeria, stated that British government has no intention to influence the outcome of the 2019 general election, adding that it does not have a preferred candidate.

“It is important to stress that the recent visit of the Prime Minister, Theresa May, to Nigeria was not an endorsement of support for the president or any candidate in the election next year," Laura said.

In a previous report by NAIJ.com, British prime minister, Theresa May, said she had an excellent time in Nigeria and hopes to see increased trade and investment between Nigeria and the UK.

She spoke with newsmen at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja on Wednesday in Lagos, shortly before departing the country at 8:10 p.m.

“I was in Abuja and also in Lagos to see the thriving business community here. We want to see increased trade between Nigeria and UK, increased investment, bringing jobs here in Nigeria, jobs in the UK."
