President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, September 9, assured Catholic bishops in Sokoto state that he has no plan to make Nigeria an Islamic nation as some persons claims. He said this in his speech at the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), The Nation reports.

President Buhari wondered why injurious rumours were promoted by outsiders, adding that such religious propaganda has weaved suspicion and distrust leading to disunity in the country.
Represented by the secretary to the federal government, Boss Mustapha, the president maintained that such negative propaganda being promoted included, the membership of Nigeria to the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), introduction of Shariah in northern states, Boko Haram terrorism as well as farmers-herdsmen conflicts.
He blamed the dark scheme on some desperate politicians, who have decided to use religion as an instrument to propagate hatred.
President Buhari said: “It is pertinent to note that due to circumstances we have found ourselves as a nation, suspicion on religious grounds has almost destroyed the fabrics of unity and love that bind us.
“There has been a lot of negative propaganda being instigated by outsiders and finds narrative in the church that there is a plan to islamise Nigeria without any credible fact.
“The issue of membership of Nigeria to OIC, Shariah and farmers/herdsmen clashes had created a lot of suspicion in the minds of the people despite the fact that the problems had existed in the country for several decades.”
He remarked that Christian and Muslim heads had both been victims of mindless killings in most parts of Nigeria.
Reaffirming the presidency's commitment to security of lives and property, he stated: “I assure all Nigerians that criminals will be fished out and dealt with. The Federal Government will continue to provide a safe society for everyone.

“The fight against the Boko Haram insurgency is achieving the desired goal, while efforts are being made to tackle myriad of challenges in the polity.”
Speaking to the bishops towards the close of the conference, he said: “As you round off this conference, I urge you to go back to your various communities and preach a message of hope, reconciliation and peace.”
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported that the president, Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Worldwide, Pastor Abraham Akinosun on Saturday, April 28, urged churches to stop complaining but pray for President Muhammadu Buhari to overcome challenges facing the nation.
Akinosun made the appeal while ministering at the grand finale of a seven-day fasting and prayer at Ikoyi Mountain, Ero-Omo village, Osun for the nation on Saturday morning.
