Senator Godswill Akpabio received a hero’s welcome in Akwa Ibom when he arrived in the state ahead of his planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The former Senate minority leader who is set to move to the APC landed on Tuesday, August 7. Premium Times reports that APC and PDP supporters were at the airport to receive Akpabio.

A former aide to the senator said: “The crowd was something else, very unprecedented. “It’s a triumphant entry, I can tell you this.”
The commissioner for culture and tourism, Victor Antai, and the commissioner for labour, productivity and manpower planning, Ibanga Akpabi, were among those who were at the airport to receive him.
Two House of Representatives members, Emmanuel Ekon (Abak federal constituency), and Emmanuel Akpan (Ikot Ekpene federal constituency), also joined those that received Akpabio.
Meanwhile, amidst defection rumour, senators elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has begun moves to replace minority leader of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio and regretted not getting rid of him earlier.

Vanguard reports that the a source from PDP said the senators claimed fear of overheating the polity and causing crisis in the PDP made them not to remove him as Minority Leader when they discovered that his commitment started waning.
A PDP senator who begged to be anonymous said: “some months ago, it came to the knowledge of the Senate PDP caucus that the Minority Leader was having some challenges with leading the members."
