Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has told superagent Jorge Mendes to set up a deal for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as a Paul Pogba replacement, Daily Star quoting Il Messaggero.

The Portuguese manager has been left frustrated by United's transfer plans this summer.

During their pre-season tour in USA, Mourinho has taken a pop at his squad, individual players and even vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

The 55-year-old had expected at least two more signings and is desperate to sign a new centre-back with Toby Alderweireld heavily touted.

There have also been rumours Paul Pogba will leave for Barcelona and the Catalan club have already made an offer which has been rejected, but are expected to return.

And reports have suggested that United will go for Milinkovic-Savic as a direct replacement.

According to Il Messaggero, a Roman-based publication, Mourinho has sought out Mendes to arrange a transfer for the ex-Genk midfielder.

A total of £89million has been touted as the price, the exact amount Paul Pogba cost United two summers ago.

United made the Serbian a top target over the summer after a stunning year at Lazio and with Serbia at the World Cup.

Nemanja Matic had even endorsed the 23-year-old, who was reportedly keen to join up with his national team-mate.

Milinkovic-Savic named Matic as one of his idols in a recent interview.

After being compared to Zinedine Zidane, he said: "That comparison can only flatter me. However, I see myself more as a Yaya Toure.

"As for idols, I can say I have always watched and looked up to Nemanja Matic as well."

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had earlier reported that Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has warned his former club not to sell Paul Pogba to Barcelona.

Super agent Mino Raiola is trying to work out a sensational move for the France World Cup winner.
