Soldiers, scores of insurgents die as Boko Haram ambushes Nigerian Army troops in Yobe

- Some insurgents laid an ambush for troops of the Nigerian Army on Sasawa Road in Yobe state

- Army says the terrorists paid for their action with the lives of scores of their fighters who were killed in a gun battle

- The Army says sadly, some soldiers were also killed in the gun fight

The Nigerian Army has announced the death of scores of Boko Haram insurgents in the Sasawa area of Yobe state after the terrorists laid an ambush for its troops.

According to a statement by Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu, spokesman for the Operation Lafiya Dole Theatre Command late on Saturday, July 21, the insurgents had been on their way to attack a popular market in Yobe when they decided to ambush troops.

Scores of the terrorists however paid dearly with their lives in the ensuing fierce gun battle which also witnessed some casualties on the part of the Nigerian soldiers.

The statement read: "Troops of 233 Battalion deployed in Operation Lafiya Dole have killed scores of Boko Haram insurgents while countering an ambush staged by elements of Boko Haram Insurgents along Sasawa Road in Babbangida Local Government Area of Yobe state.

"The troops encountered the ambush today at about 12.30 noon, during a fighting patrol to clear the general area of fleeing elements of Boko Haram insurgents who have been on rampage for food and logistics.

"The gallant troops overpowered and neutralized the insurgents in the fire fight that ensued and successfully extricated themselves from the ambush.

"Information have so far confirmed that the insurgents whose original mission was to attack and loot the near by Babangida market for food and other logistics, aborted the mission to stage the ambush on getting wind of the troops patrol. Sadly, while fighting through the ambush, the troops recorded some casualties.

"The situation has been brought under firm control by troops of Operation Lafiya Dole and additional troops have been drafted to the area to reinforce the patrol troops, while the Air Task Force is on aerial surveillance of the area to track down fleeing insurgent survivors .

"The good people of Babangida Local Government Area and Yobe state in general are urged not to panic but to remain calm and steadfast."

The attack comes just days after NAIJ.com reported that Boko Haram insurgents also ambushed a military convoy at Boboshe village in Bama local government area of Borno state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) had reported that five officers, 18 soldiers and 8 trucks went missing after the attack which occurred early on Saturday, July 14.
