The intrigues in the Nigerian political scene continued on Monday, July 23, as the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) approved the the fusion of the Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC) into its fold.
Vanguard newspaper reports that the PDP also set up a committee to consider the possibility of changing the party’s name ahead of the 2019 general elections.

“The responsibility of the harmonisation committee is to commence the process of the possibility of change of name as part of effort to re-brand our party and to reposition it for 2019 general elections,” the spokesperson for the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, told journalists after the NEC meeting.
He said the party approved the expulsion of Senator Buruji Kashamu, representing Ogun east senatorial district in the National Assembly and three other PDP members in the state.

He stated that the others expelled from party in Ogun were Semiu Sodipo, Bayonne Adebayo and Segun Sheriki.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly met with some senators of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the presidential villa on Monday, night, July 23, to dissuade them from defection from the ruling party.
The Tribune reports that the senators led by Rabiu Kwankwaso were seen at the presidential villa, Abuja along with the Jigawa state governor, Abubakar Badaru.
Kwankwaso from Kano is having a running battle with the governor from his state and is believed to be on the verge of defecting from the ruling party.
