Russia 2018: Suarez’s goal hands Uruguay second round spot after overcoming stubborn Saudi Arabia

- Uruguay will now battle hosts’ Russia on June 25 to decide the group winners’ as well as runner-up

Luiz Suarez 23th minute strike was all Uruguay needed to overcome Saudi Arabia 1-0 in their second Group A match at the Rostov Arena, Rostov at the ongoing 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.

Indeed, it was a double celebration for the Barcelona forward, who was earning his 100th cap for the South American side as well as helping his side reach the round of 16.

At the end, both sides created numerous chances to score, but none was able to convert the opportunities that came their way.

With 10 minutes of play left, Uruguay almost benefited from an own goal but that was not to be as the ball failed to connect.

To be honest, the South Americans named a strong squad for the encounter that also included Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani but still could not strike more than once.

At the end, the Uruguayans will be excited with the result, after booking a place to the knock-out rounds, with a game to spare.

Uruguay will now battle tournament hosts’ Russia on June 25, at the Cosmos Arena, Samara in the last group game that will ultimately, decide the group winners’ as well as runner-up positions.

On the other hand, the duo of Egypt and Saudi Arabia who contest the other group fixture are already eliminated from the global football fiesta.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that Russia qualified for the round of 16 after beating the Pharaohs of Egypt 3-1 in their second Group A game.

Egypt welcomed Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah to their squad after missing the first game against Uruguay, but he could not save his country from an embarrassing defeat against Russia.
