Protest rocks Port Harcourt over alleged persecution of Patience Jonathan by EFCC

- Women from the Niger Delta region allege that Patience Jonathan is being harassed

- They want President Buhari and the National Assembly to call the EFCC to order

- They accuse the government of deliberate witch-hunt of the former first lady

Reports says hundreds of women from the Niger Delta area of the country marched on streets in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers state, on Tuesday, June 20, alleging harassment of former first lady, Patience Jonathan by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The protesters marched to the Rivers Government House urging President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Assembly and the international community to call the EFCC to order.

Vanguard reports that a letter read by the leader of the group, Chief Eunice Igwe, stated: “We call on President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Assembly and the international community to call the EFCC and other security agencies to order.

“The mothers of Niger Delta want this obvious hatred and injustice against our daughter and mother to stop forthwith or else we will shut down the region. Enough is enough.”

The protesting group claimed they were not pleased that the family of former President Goodluck Jonathan was going through attacks and humiliation despite freely relinquishing power.

“It is on record that no former first lady has been investigated, attacked and humilated in the history of Nigeria like Dame Patience Jonathan.

“Why is the case of Dame Patience Jonathan different? Is it because she is from a minority ethnic group?” they queried.

The Niger Delta women lamented that the repeated attacks on Patience Jonathan amounted to a deliberate witch-hunt by the federal government.

Governor Nyesom Wike, who was represented by the permanent secretary of Government House, Port Harcourt, Onyenachi Nwankwor, promised the protesters that their letter would get to the appropriate authorities.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday, January 22, lamented before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of the Federal High Court in Abuja, over the demolition of some properties linked to her foundation in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The properties were demolished despite a pending suit in respect of the properties before Justice John Tsoho of a Federal High Court in Abuja.
