Award winning Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has said Igbos in Lagos are ashamed to speak their language.
Chimamanda speaking recently with The New Yorker said Igbos who grew up in Lagos run away from their ‘Igbos -ness’ especially in public.
She said: "There is something I call, unkindly, Igbo shame. Igbos who grew up in Lagos try their hardest to run away from their Igbo-ness. If you meet them in public and say something in Igbo, they will not respond in Igbo. We lost the Biafran war and learned to be ashamed."

The writer added that in her family, she and her father are the ones who care most about the Igbo language. Her nieces and nephews hardly speak it.
She worries that within a generation or two the language will die out.

Adichie in an interview with Hillary at a Pen World Voices Festival lecture at the Cooper Union in Manhattan on Sunday, April 22, had expressed displeasure over Clinton’s use of “wife” to begin her Twitter bio.
“In your Twitter account, the first word that describes you is ‘Wife.’ And then I think it’s ‘Mom,’ and then it’s ‘Grandmother'. And when I saw that, I have to confess that I felt just a little bit upset," she said.
