During more than 40 years power production in our country has been changed from one into another. For example, there were gas, oil-fired, hydroelectric and coal-fired power generators. Nowadays, gas stations and hydroelectric power plants are the most used. As for the first type of systems they function predominantly in Southern Nigeria. The second ones are located in Kainji, Shiroro and Jenna. Presently, the overall capacity of all these stations amount to 12,500 megawatts (MW).
The functioning of each power sector is controlled by generation companies, such as:
- Independent Power Producers (IPP);
- generation systems under National Integrated Power Project (NIPP).
Power plants in Nigeria
Well, now we will list the stations of power supply in Nigeria and give you a little information about them.
Kainji power station reservoir
This is the first hydroelectric system from our list. As for its installed power capacity it amounts 760 megawatts. It has been launched in 1968. The location of this Nigeria power sector in Niger state.
Jebba hydro power station reservoir
It also belongs to power generator that uses hydro energy. This power station has 576.8 megawatts of capacity. The date of its launching is 1985. It’s also located in Niger State.
Shiroro power station reservoir
This one more power station with hydro energy. As for its power capacity it equals 600 megawatts. This power generator was established in 1990. It has the same location like previous ones.
Egbin power plant
Situated in northern-eastern Lagos State, or rather in Ikorodu. This reservoir functions on gas heated steam turbine. Its generating capacity amounts 1320s megawatt. The work on its launching were finished in 1986.
Sapele power station
As for its functioning, it works through simple cycle gas and gas heated stream turbines. This power station has 1020 megawatts of capacity. The year of its launching is 1981. The station is located in Sapele, Delta State.
Transcorp – Ughelli power plant
It is situated in Delta state. As a previous station, it also works through a simple cycle gas heated turbine. This power plant of Nigeria has 972 megawatts of capacity. Generally, Ughelli power generator has three phases: the first was established in 1966, the second one – 1975, the third – 1978, and the fourth - 1990.
Afam I-IV &V power plant
These stations in River State also function through a simple gas turbine. The work on them were finished approximately in early 2000. As for their power capacities they both equal 977 megawatts.
Geregu I power station
This station form Kogi State works through a gas turbine with open cycle. Geregu I power station has 414 megawatts of capacity. It was finished in 2007.
Omotosho I power station
The plant functions on gas turbine with simple cycle. Its capacity equals 335 megawatts. The power plant from Ondo state was established in 2006.
Papalanto (Olorunsogo) power station
It has the same principle of work like the previous one. And this power plant from Ogun state has capacity 335 megawatts. The year of its launching is 2007.
Kwale Okpai power station (IPP)
The owner of this Nigeria power sector is Agip Oil Company. It functions through a gas turbine with combined cycle. As for its capacity, it amounts 480 megawatts. The year of station’s launching is 2005. It’s situated in Delta State.
Afam vi power station (IPP)
As this Nigerian power plant works on gas turbine with combined cycle, it helps to avoid the excess emissions of greenhouse gas. The power station has 642 megawatts of capacity. It has been launched in Rivers state in 2010.
Ibom power station (IPP)
This electricity-generating plant works on gas turbine with a simple cycle. As for its capacity it amounts 190 megawatt. The year of its launching is 2009. Its location is Akwa Ibom State. The phase (II) of this power plant has a capacity 500 megawatts.
AES Barge (IPP)
The power plant from Lagos State also functions on a gas turbine with a simple cycle. The capacity of this Nigerian power station amounts 270 megawatts. The year of its launching is 2001.
Omoku power plant (IPP)
The principle of its work is the same like previous one. As for its capacity, it equals 150 megawatts. It was opened in 2005 in Rivers State.
Trans-Amadi power plant (IPP)
This generator works on gas heated system. The capacity of Trans-Amadi power plant is 136 megawatt. Its location is Rivers State.
Rivers power plant (IPP)
The plant from Rivers State also has a gas heated system. Its capacity is 180 megawatt.
Aba power generator (IPP)
It works on a gas turbine with simple cycle. The capacity of this Nigerian power station from Aba State amounts 140 megawatts. And the date of its launching is 2012.
Geregu II power plant (NIPP)
The principle of station’s work is also based on simple gas turbine. As for its capacity it amounts 434 megawatts. It was also built in 2012 and is located in Kogi state.
Sapele power station (NIPP)
The electricity-generating station functions on a gas turbine with simple cycle. The power plant has 450 megawatts of capacity. It has been launched in 2012. Its location is Delta State, Sapele city.
Olorunsogo power plant (NIPP)
This power generator from Ogun State (Olorunsogo) functions on gas turbine with combined system. The capacity of the plant amounts 675 megawatts.
Egbema power generator (NIPP)
As for the principle of its functioning it works on a gas turbine with simple system. And its capacity equals 338 megawatts. The year of its launching is 2013. The location of this power generator is Imo state.
Calabar power station (NIPP)
It also functions on a simple gas turbine. The power plant from Cross River state has 561 megawatts of capacity.
Ihovbor power station (NIPP)
The principle of its operation is the same like previous one. As for its capacity it amounts 450 megawatts. Ihovbor power plant is located in Benin. The year of station’s launching is 2013.

Power generators in the process of development
The next power generators are not ready yet. However, they will operate very soon. Let’s consider some of them.
Azura power plant (IPP)
This power generator from Benin City functions on a gas tribune with a simple cycle. As for its installed capacity it amounts 450 megawatts. The station is in the developmental stage now.
Mambilla power plant
This is also a power plant that is under development. It’s situated at Taraba state. They are planning to finish its building this year (2018).
Zungeru power plant
This station belongs to the stations with hydroelectric systems. The capacity of the power station is to be 700 megawatts. It will be operate by 2020. The owner of this generator is Ministry of Mines, Industry and Energy.
Dadin kowa hydroelectric station
This power plant will have hydroelectric system. As for its capacity, it will be 29 megawatts. The opening is planned for 2019.
Okpai power generator phase 2
They also promise to open it in 2019. And the capacity of the future power station is to be 480 megawatts.
All these plants are responsible for supplying electricity in our country. Some of them are still in the developmental stage. We know that this is not the end. According to some sources even more power plants will be built in the coming years.
