Containers load of tramadol reportedly intercepted in Lagos port

- Customs officers prevent attempts to smuggle containers of tramadol out of Tincan seaport

- NAFDAC seals three major companies producing codeine

A large quantity of tramadol tablet allegedly smuggled from India has been reportedly intercepted by the Tincan Island command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

Leadership reports that the shipment in containers was said to be intercepted by customs officers after a failed attempt to smuggle them out of the seaport.

A customs officer who did not want to be identified said the seizure was as a result of efforts being put in place by the customs service to prevent smuggling and evasion of duty in the seaports.

In recent times, tramadol which is an opioid analgesic prescribed to treat moderate to moderately severe pain has been listed among controlled drugs suspected to being abused by some youths across the country.

Meanwhile, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down the Peace Standard Pharmaceutical ltd., BIORAJ Pharmaceutical ltd. both in Ilorin, Kwara state, and the Emzor Pharmaceuticals Industry, Lagos, as it probed the codeine-based syrup epidemic.

Codeine-based syrup is used in treatment of cough, but when abused could lead to harmful and deadly addiction.

In a statement by NAFDAC on Monday, May 7, director general of the agency, Mojisola Adeyeye said that the clampdown was due to the companies’ inability to provide required documents for NAFDAC officials during the inspection of the facilities at Ilorin and Lagos.
