Ronaldo's goal rescues Real Madrid from an embarrassing defeat at the Bernabeu

- Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Athletic Bilbao

- Inaki Williams scored the opener in the 11th minute

- Zidane's side remain third in the La Liga standings

Real Madrid wrestled to salvage a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao at the Santiago Bernabeu as the Whites remain third in the league.

It was Atheltic's first point at the Bernabeu since 2005 losing all 20 matches in their previous visit to the Spanish capital.

Inaki Williams stunned the home side after timing his run to perfection as he chips the ball past Kaylor Navas to put Athletic Club ahead on the night with just 14 minutes played.

Los Blancos pressed for the equalizer as Ronaldo's had hit header hit the cross-bar after a well met cross from Dani Carvajal.

Asensio also dribbled his way into the box but a staggering shot forced a save from Kepa Arrizabalaga from in the 43rd minute kept the scoreline 1-0 at half time.

Madrid pushed forward in search of an equalizer but the Bilbaoa side cleared their lines properly to frustrate the defending champions.

The visitors should have made it two after slack defending from Real as a cross fell to Raul Garcia in the box who smashed his shot against the post.

Gareth Bale and Isco were brought on for Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio in the 69th minute as time was running out for the Galaticos.

The long wait for the goal was over, with three minutes to go, Luka Modric was given time and space to shoot from 20-yards as it came off the boots of Ronaldo to make it 1-1.

Both sides remain stalemates as the points were shred at the Bernabeu to the disappointment to the home team.

Zinedine Zidane's side failed to close the gap to Atletico Madrid who have 71 points to Real's 68 but they remained in third following Valencia's loss to Getafe.
