Attack on Senate: Ekweremadu holds important meeting with Osinbajo

Ike Ekweremadu who is the deputy Senate president is currently in an important closed-door meeting with vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

Daily Trust reports that the meeting is taking place today, Wednesday, April 18, at the vice presidential wing of the Aso Rock Villa.

President Muhammadu Buhari is in London on a bi-lateral meeting while Senate president, Bukola Saraki is also in Washington for a World Bank meeting.

Details of the meeting has not been made public yet but it is reportedly connected to the invasion of the Senate by suspected hoodlums.

NAIJ.com had reported that protesters stormed the Senate chamber on Wednesday, April 18, and stole the mace. The protesters are supporters of a suspended senator, Ovie Omo-Agege.

They left the National Assembly with the mace in a black SUV. The mace is the symbol of authority of the parliament.

A security personnel at the entrance of the National Assembly, said he was told by the protesters they were officers with the senator.

Meanwhile, Senate spokesperson, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (Niger, APC), described the invasion as an act of treason and called for police action.

He said: “Today, some hoodlums led by suspended Senator, Ovie Omo-Agege, walked into the Senate plenary and seized the symbol of authority of the Upper Legislative Chamber, the mace.

“This action is an act of treason, as it is an attempt to overthrow a branch of the Federal Government of Nigeria by force, and it must be treated as such. All security agencies must stand on the side of due process and immediately mobilize their personnel to retrieve the mace and apprehend the mastermind and the perpetrators of this act."
