The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to allegations that some Immigration staff at the High Commission of Nigeria, London, were extorting money from passport applicants.
The development was made public in a press release signed by the ministry's spokesperson, Tope Adeleye Elias-Fatile.

NAIJ.com notes that the ministry stated that it is working closely with the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) Abuja, to investigate the matter.
It stressed that it had zero tolerance for corrupt practices and advised members of the public to make use of its internal mechanisms to report any erring officials.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) banned cash payments for passport processing as part of efforts to eliminate corruption at all passport offices nationwide.
The NIS spokesperson, Sunday James, disclosed this in an interview in Abuja.
He said the comptroller general of the NIS, Muhammad Babandede, had directed that henceforth all payments for passport processing must be done online and through designated banks.
