Nigerian popular musician and entertainer Charles 'Charly Boy' Oputa has said that the action of the police against the group protesting the resumption or resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari is disgraceful.

Charly Boy alongside other Nigerians led by a civil society organization, Concerned Citizens, were on Tuesday, August 8, tear gassed by officers of the Nigeria police at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.

The police also used water cannons on the citizens protesting the long stay of the president in London.

But defending the action of the field officers, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory police command, Anjuguri Manzah, said the tear gas and water cannons were used to disperse hoodlums who might hijack the protest.

However, speaking to NAIJ.com on Wednesday, August 9, Charly Boy said the police exceeded its boundary while carrying out its duty on the previous day.

The musician said the police action was 'very wrong' and turned against the Force.

He said: "Because we also use the press in a positive way, that was what turned against them. That was why they came out in full force yesterday because they were overwhelmed with the turn out.

"I know that all of this is being controlled by the people who have captured the power, they tell them (the police) what to do and this is the evil we are up against.

"We have nothing against Buhari, as far as we are concerned, he seem to be an honourable person but it is this cabal around him.

"Remember one time, his wife was crying out [about the cabal], this is exactly what she was trying to tell Nigerians.

Not deterred by the action of the police against the group, Charly Boy said: "I mean, it ruffled up a little bit but still we stand."

Also present at the sit-out protest are Nollywood actor, Jim Iyke; the leader of the Concerned Nigeria, Deji Adeyanju; Nigerian renowned activist, Aisha Yesufu.

Jim Iyke also calling for the resumption or the resignation of the president said Nigeria has become a laughing stock for other nations.

He said President Buhari cannot continue leading Nigeria from far away London.

"What is going on?" Jim Iyke asked.

"Enough is enough! It is a simple thing, our mantra is one, our decision is one. Unequivocally, we are saying that the president either resumes or he resigns. It is natural when you get old, you shift na let the young ones take over," the actor said.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the group started its protest on Monday, August 7, while marking the president's 92 days in London.

The group while protesting also urged the Nigerian Senate to activate Section 144 of the 1999 Constitution as amended by instituting a medical panel that will ascertain the true health condition of the president.

The panel, the group said, will also certify the president either fit or unfit to run the nation.
