In an apparent long-shot attempt to remove Donald Trump from office, a Democratic member of the US Congress Rep. Brad Sherman, has filed an article of impeachment against the US president, Time reports.
Sherman (D-California) made the filing on Wednesday, July 12.
Trump is accused by the lawmaker of obstructing the ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the US election.
According to Sherman, the firing of James Comey, the former FBI director, indicated an act of obstruction.

However, the lawmaker acknowledged that his action is only the first step.
In a statement released, he said the filing is "the first step on a very long road.
"But if the impulsive incompetency continues, then eventually — many, many months from now — Republicans will join the impeachment effort."
The development comes a day after the president’s first son Donald Trump Jr., admitted to meeting with a Russian lawyer during the campaign period.
The lawyer had promised to provide damaging information against Trump’s rival for the presidency Hillary Clinton.
However, Trump Jr. stated that he did not receive any such information.
