A motion of urgent public importance on the alleged killing of 97 Nigerians by Cameroonian gendarmes was brought to the attention of the House of Representatives today, Thursday, July 13.
Raising the motion, Honourable Gabriel Kolawole representing Akoko South East/South West Federal Constituency said although there are reports that the executive has summoned the Cameroonian ambassador, the House must take a stand on the matter.
He advised the House to strongly condemn the killings and mandate the committee on foreign affairs to invite the minister for foreign affairs to brief the House in what's being done to prevent a recurrence.
He also said the affected families should be compensated and a minute of silence observed in honour of the departed.
He went on to say the issue should be treated as an act of war if it reoccurs.

The motion was seconded by Honourable Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje, who represents Bende Federal Constituency in Abia state.
She however cautioned that all facts concerning the matter have yet to be brought to the fore and this should be considered while reaching resolutions.
Contributing to the motion, Honourable Rotimi Agunsoye representing Kosofe Federal Constituency in Lagos state said: “We have Cameroonians stay in Nigeria, this is the time to have our immigration stand up and do something.”
NAIJ.com gathered that the motion was amended and adopted, while the committee on foreign affairs was mandated to investigate the matter and report back to the House.
Meanwhile, Nigeria recently assumed the chairmanship of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC).
The PSC is the standing organ of the AU for the prevention, management and resolution of conflict.
It is a key element of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), which is the umbrella term for the main AU mechanisms for promoting peace, security and stability in Africa.
