Anambra court sends DisCo’s managers to jail over crazy bills

- Anambra High court has jailed both the manager and marketing manager of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) over illegal bill

- The complainant said that the managers disconnected its supply when it rejected the crazy bill

An Anambra state High Court sitting in Onitsha on Tuesday, July 11, sentenced the manager and marketing manager of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo), Onitsha district to three months imprisonment over crazy bills.

Punch reports that the mangers were sued by the leaders of the Iweka electronic amalgamated traders association, Onitsha over the disconnection of electricity supply to them.

NAIJ.com gathered that the DisCo gave N2m estimated bill to the traders before disconnecting them from electricity supply.

It was learnt that the traders rejected the bill and dragged the defendants/respondents to court.

After oral submissions of both counsel that happened on May 23, 2016, the court made an interim order of injunction.

Justice Ike Obu of the court described the EEDC managers act as crass of impunity after he convicted the managers sentenced them to three months imprisonment without the option of fine.

The judge said: “You are hereby committed to prison for three months until you purged yourselves of the contempt.”

The development sparked wild jubilation at the Iweka Electronic market as traders took to the streets expressing their joy.

The chairman of the market, Ndubuisi Egotanwa in his reaction commended the court for giving the ruling.

Egotanwa said the EEDC workers had wielded so much powers in the area and “thought that no person, group of persons or even the court cannot stop them from their illegal disconnection and crazy bills”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that the NERC ​declared that electricity consumers ​that were ​not provided with prepaid meters ​as at​ March 1 should stop paying electricity bills presented by DISCOs on the basis of estimated billing methodology.

The commission also ordered the DISCOs not to disconnect any such customer that refuses to pay the bills and further advised such customers to report to the commission if disconnected.
