Why did Buhari speak to Nigerians in Hausa as if he's president to only that tribe? - Ijaw group blasts

- The Ijaw Youth Council notes that Buhari is president of all ethnic groups within the country and not just Hausas

- The group notes that English is the official language of the country and the only language understood by all Nigerians

- They raise doubts over the audio message and wondered if it was really delivered by the president himself since it was done in Hausa

President Muhammadu Buhari has been lambasted by the Ijaw Youth Council for speaking to Nigerians in Hausa in his sallah message transmitted on the BBC.

The group expressed surprise that Buhari, whom it noted Nigerians had been eager to hear from, would choose to communicate in a language only understood by a particular ethnic group.

According to reports, the group’s statement was made by its spokesman Henry Iyalla on Sunday June 25.

According to Iyalla, it would be difficult for Nigerians to agree that the President was actually the person that spoke to Nigerians on the BCC.

He noted that the official language of the country is English, and Buhari should have spoken in English because that is the only language that the entire country would be able to hear and understand.

Iyalla stated: “He is not only the President of the Hausa, he is also the President of Yoruba, Igbo, Niger Delta and other ethic nationalities.

“We are not really sure that he is the one who really spoke and this has not doused any tension about his health.”
