- He noted the supreme sacrifice made by MKO Abiola, in laying down his life for the country
- He chided former military head of state, Ibrahim Babangida and his conspirators for their roles in the June 12 saga
President Muhammadu Buhari has been urged to recognize the acclaimed winner of June 12 election, MKO Abiola, as a former President of Nigeria, by Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman, a human rights activist and Executive Chairman, Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ).
According to reports, Sulaiman made his comments in a statement released on Sunday, June 11.
NAIJ.com notes that the human rights activist lamented that successive governments had refused to recognize that election, “forgetting that without June 12, there could not May 29 in the country”.

He called for the renaming of national emoluments like Eagles Square, after Abiola as he noted that the lack of recognition to Abiola at the federal level since May 29, 1999 when Nigerian transitioned into its present democratic experience was hurting the political system.
He commended states like Lagos, which declared June 12 a public holiday.
His statement read in part: “The June 12 1993 President election annulled by the evil genius and former Head of Military Junta, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (rtd), would continue to be remained the watershed in the annals of political history and development of the country.
“This is because the winner of the election, Chief MKO Abiola and other martyrs paid the supreme sacrifice for the enthronement of current democratic experience by laying down their precious lives.
“It is a shame that some gullible elements in the country are still celebrating General Bababgida for selfish political interest. If we are in sane country, the likes of Babangida and his conspirators then should have been languishing in jail for the rest of their lives for by robbing the masses of the country of their political opinion.”
