The NDEI chairman recalled the role Lamido played when he was the youth leader of the defunct Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in former Kano state that culminated in the victory of the party in the 1979 elections in Kano and Kaduna states.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that ahead of the 2019 elections, there was an ongoing battle for supremacy between former vice president Atiku Abubakar and a former governor of Jigawa state Dr. Sule Lamido. According to the New Telegraph, both men are preparing intensely for an imminent showdown.

A source reportedly stated that due to the uncertainties surrounding Buhari and Osinbajo in the race, "Atiku has opted to shun the Bola Tinubu-led south-west block of the APC (due to Osinbajo), preferring rather to court the leadership of pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere and some former governors in the south-west, who he believes would be able to work for him when the real battle starts."
