Disbarred Emeka Ugwuonye not my lawyer, Nnamdi Kanu cries out

- The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Nnamdi Kanu has debunked claims that Emeka Ugwuonye is his lawyer

- Kanu's lead counsel Ifeanyi Ejiofor said Ugwuonye who was recently barred from legal practice in Nigeria only approached him to join his team but he (Ejiofor) rejected him

- Ugwuonye was disbarred in New York and Maryland for professional misconduct

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Nnamdi Kanu has debunked claims that Emeka Ugwuonye is his lawyer.

Speaking to NAIJ.com Kanu's lead counsel Ifeanyi Ejiofor said Ugwuonye who was recently barred from legal practice in Nigeria only approached him to join his team but he (Ejiofor) rejected him.

"I have been seeing a lot of online reports that Ugwuonye is part of our team, that is not true. He is not part of the counsels that make up Nnamdi Kanu's legal team," Ejiofor said.

"What happened was that he came to me that he wanted to join the team of lawyers to represent Nnamdi Kanu but of course I know him well and the fact that he has some very shady past, I rejected his him," he added.

Vanguard had reported that Ugwuonye was disbarred in New York and Maryland for professional misconduct.

He later relocated to Nigeria after his career ordeal in the United States of America only to be sanctioned by the Nigeria's Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) of body benchers.

The committee responsible for recommending punitive sanctions against misconduct among Nigerian lawyers ordered the chief registrar of the Supreme Court to strike out Ugwuonye’s name.

Also the chief prosecutor of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) at the LPDC J.S. Okutepa found Ugwuonye liable for fraud.

He also promised to make details of the order of the LPDC to the Supreme Court public.

NAIJ.com had earlier reported that a Federal High Court in Uyo ordered the immediate release of an IPOB member Bright Chimezie.

The court also ordered that the Department of State Service which arrested Chimezie on October 14, 2016 and detained him since then pay a fine of N5 million to the IPOB member.
