JUST IN: University of Abuja registrar, 21 others suspended for protesting

- The registrar of the University of Abuja Rifkatu Swanta has been suspended

- Swanta was suspended indefinitely by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) over anti-union activities

- She was suspended alongside 21 other staff of the institution by the SSANU

- SSANU alleged that the officials of the institution held a rally at the University of Abuja protesting corrupt practices by some members of the management

The registrar of the University of Abuja Rifkatu Swanta has been suspended indefinitely by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) over anti-union activities.

Swanta was suspended alongside 21 other staff of the university for holding an illegal congress.

SSANU alleged that the officials of the institution held a rally at the University of Abuja protesting corrupt practices by some members of the management.

The officials while protesting said the sack of two of its members by members of the University of Abuja governing council for whistle-blowing is illegal.

The registrar of the University of Abuja Rifkatu Swanta has been suspended

The suspension letter which was titled, "Suspension of some SSANU members in University of Abuja” and dated April 12, was addressed to the vice chancellor accused the suspended members of holding illegal congress.

SSANU asked the university management to henceforth stop any remittance of check-off dues of the affected members to the union.

The letter which was signed by SSANU's deputy national president Moses Aogo said the union took its decision after the National Administrative Council (NAC) held its meeting on April 11.

Aogo said the decision was taken after a thorough consideration of the report of anti-union activities brought against them.

The union also urged the institution's management to ensure that: "All the illegal actions taken by the suspended members such as locking of the SSANU secretariat, forging of the union’s letter headed paper to open Bank Accounts etc are reversed with immediate effect."

“In the interest of industrial peace, management should also ensure the security of all lives and property of SSANU members on the campus," the letter said.

SSANU also said only leadership of the union recognized by the national body in the University of Abuja is the Jude Nwabueze-led executive committee.
