Breaking: Pandemonium as cultists clash in Lagos

- Police have arrested 30 people over Lagos cult clash

- The clash was said to have started on Sunday April 23

- The casualties are not yet ascertained

Police have arrested 30 people on Monday April 24 at Idioro Mushin area of Lagos when suspected cultists clashed in the area.

NAIJ.com gathered that the clash was said to have started on Sunday evening April 23 during which many people were injured.

It was gathered that trouble started when youth numbering over 100 invaded Idi Oro market and reportedly demanded money. Youth in Alamutu Street were said to have resisted the move resulting into a fight.

Dangerous weapons like machetes, axe, rods and bottles were reportedly used during the fight, which lasted few minutes before more police men were mobilised.

About three shops and a building were burning when police arrived at the scene while several goods like beans, bags of garri, fufu and palm oil among others were wasted on the ground at the scene of the incident.

The hoodlums were reported to have cashed in on the chaos to loot several food items of market sellers like bags of garri, beans, palm oil, banana etc.

During the incidence, men of Rapid Response Squad who were stationed in the area had dispersed the hoodlums with tear gas before the arrival of more police officers.

Shop owners who later walked in when police men came were wailing over loss of goods in the fire.

A medicine store owner who declined to mention his name stated that his shop burnt because he declined to give the guys N600 when they came in the morning.

He noted that this was the third time his shop was burnt over crisis in Idi Oro.

About 30 youth have so far been arrested over the incident. Residents confirmed those arrested were leaders and gang members involved in the fracas.

More than three bags of Indian hemp, matchetes, axes and rods were said to have been recovered by men of Rapid Response Squad and Taskforce, when the hoodlums were chased into the streets.

Shops in adjoining streets were closed over the incident while more police men from Rapid Response Squad, Taskforce and divisional police posts around the area have been mobilised to the scene.

It is not yet certain is anybody died in the incident.

Another fight is also reported to be on in the Hausa community in Ijegun.

Shops and schools have reportedly been closed as a result of sporadic gunshots.

Meanwhile the Lagos Police Command has said that it has arrested eight persons alleged to be involved in a clash that led to the destruction of property in Idi-Oro, Mushin.

The command Spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Monday.

Mr Famous-Cole said that the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, had also deployed more police personnel to ensure peace in the area.

He said the suspects, who were arrested in Idi Oro, had machetes and axes in their possession.

“Normalcy has returned to the area and there is a heavy police presence there.

“The public should go about their business. There is a free- flow of traffic in the area now,” Mr Famous-Cole said.

It was learnt that a quarrel which occurred among some residents in Alamutu area of Idi-Oro in Mushin on Sunday degenerated on Monday morning, leading to destruction of property.

The police had to deploy men of the Rapid Response Squad to bring the situation under control.
