Following the protracted strike action by teachers in Delta primary and post primary schools, Delta state government on Tuesday said it is committed to prompt payment of salaries to teachers and providing necessary facilities for learning in the schools.
Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Sunny Ogwu, said the state government has paid primary school teachers up to November 2016, noting that the December salary for the primary teachers is ready, hence Ogwu said the state government is prompt is paying teachers’ salaries.
Many of the teachers in the state have been complaining over the challenges confronting their welfare over the delay in the payment of their salaries, hence many have resorted to different unwholesome activities to feed their families and meet their daily needs.

The strike which commenced on Thursday, March 9, 2017 had dragged on with series of meetings but all ending with no concrete agreements on both the part of the Nigerian Union of Teachers and the state government represented by the commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Chiedu Ebie.
Many of the teachers had said if the state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, cannot pay workers’ salaries, he should resign and give way to an individual who has the capacity and political will to meet the need of workers in the state.
The Nigerian Union of Teachers is unwilling to shift its ground until the agreement reached is fully implemented and the primary school teachers are fully paid, failure to do so, the schools may continue to remain under lock and key.
