Disarm Fulani herdsmen now! Anglican primate warn federal government

– Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), The Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh has spoken on the terror by Fulani herdsmen

– The cleric called on the federal government to come up with policy to deliberately disarm the herdsmen

– He lamented that they have been wreaking havoc in the country

The primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), The Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh has called on the federal government to come up with a policy to disarm Fulani herdsmen, Daily Sun reports.

Okoh made the call, on Wednesday, February 22 in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, during his opening address at the church’s standing committee meeting comprising of primates , archbishops, bishops and the home of clergy and laity of the church.

He stated that it was unconstitutional and discriminatory for some individuals in the same country to bear arms freely, while others cannot.

Okoh warned that if the situation was not put under control, the herdsmen would continue to perpetuate crimes increasingly and threaten the peace of the nation.

He decried the incessant killing by the herdsmen especially in Southern Kaduna lamenting the loss of lives and wanton destruction of property.

Okoh also urged the federal government to use all forces at its disposal to fight the menace of kidnapping noting the rising spate of kidnapping all over the country was alarming and worrisome.

He however commended the government for its concerted efforts against terrorism, even as he appealed to the government to sustain the security in the region until terrorism is totally eliminated.

In his remark, Ogun state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, identified religious intolerance as one of the hindrances of development urging Nigerians to be more accommodating of one another’s religious beliefs.

Meanwhile, a 24-hour curfew has been imposed on Southern Kaduna following an attack on Sunday, February 20 by Fulani herdsmen which resulted in the killing of about 14 indigenes.

The curfew was imposed by the state Security Council in Jema’a and Kaura local government areas and it was with immediate effect.
