If you live in Nigeria, then you would understand it when we say grandmothers are awesome. There could be exceptions though; and that is when your grandmother is someone with the character Patience Ozokwor plays most times in the Nollywood movies.
Generally, grandmothers are sweet and loving women who are known to be the perfect children spoilers. They love to pamper their grandchildren to a point the parents of those children start to worry about the future of those kids.
There are so many things synonymous to having a grandmother in Nigeria. Most of us still have memories of the grandmothers who spent beautiful moments with us while we were growing up. We also remember them for the ‘aproko’ they did to our parents concerning the mischievous things we did. All in all, we love them and do not ever want to see them go.
Below are some of the things you would know if you have a grandmother in Nigeria:
1. When she forces you to eat
If you have a grandmother in Nigeria then you would understand that you can never be full as you are expected to eat everything she makes. Grandmothers seem to notice when you have added weight or lost some. They could turn you to a foodie and make sure your eating habit improves before you leave.
2. When she takes your side over your parents
It feels good having a supporter when you have an argument with your parents. Grandmothers would never allow your mum to beat you as they would always have something to say in your favor.

3. When they crack you up
You will have a swell time when they start to act up. Most grandmothers are humorous and would make you laugh hard when they try to do certain things. They also have excellent stories to share with you every time. Many children listen to folktales from their grandmothers; these tales are always with life lessons.
4. When she complains about you not calling her
Most grandmothers complain about their grandchildren not calling them as if they call them too. They feel they are being left out and want to be carried along every now and then. Even while they complain, they do this sweetly and make us feel loved in the process.
5. When she complains about your hairstyle and makeup
Seeing their grandchildren wear a certain hairstyle with lots of makeup on baffles most grandmothers. They would go on lecturing them about how things went in their own days. They also do not like the fact that this present day generation is going naked because of the fashion trend.
6. When the only station you can watch is African magic
While most people love their grandmothers in Nigeria, they get tired of watching only African magic channels. These are the only channels that seem to fascinate the grandmothers as they could relate more with the movies being shown there.
7. When she taunts you about getting married
Grandmothers assume the role of the mothers sometimes and mount pressure on their grandchildren when they feel they are of marriageable ages. They are always eager to see their great-grandchildren.

8. When she wants you to fix her phone
Just like some of our Nigerian mothers who do not know how to handle phones, our grandmothers could be worse. There is always one complaint or the other about the phone. If you are not helping her load airtime on it, you would be helping her adjust the ringing volume.
9. When she makes some delicious stew
Grandmothers’ meals would always be delicious. They have certain spices they add to their soups to give it a different taste. While it may not be the modern day we are used to, it would be highly satisfactory.
10. When she cries every time you leave
Grandmothers are so emotional; they always have tears in their eyes each time you leave them. They never stop waving until your car is out of their sight. Grandmothers are simply the best.
