Tension in Kogi community as suspected herdsmen reportedly kill policeman, 7 others

- Eight people have reportedly been killed by suspected herdsmen in Kogi state

- The spokesman of the state police command, Williams Aya, said four bodies have been recovered from the scene

- Aya said a detachment of policemen has been drafted to the area to restore normalcy to the community

The Kogi police command has confirmed the killing of eight people including a policeman by suspected herdsmen at Bagana community in Omala local government area of the state.

Daily Trust reports that the spokesman of the state police command, Williams Aya, said four bodies, including that of a policeman, were recovered from the community.

Aya said a detachment of policemen, comprising the mobile force, counter terrorism unit, conventional police personnel and men of the Nigerian Army had been drafted to the area to restore normalcy to the area.

A resident of the area, Engr Adanu, said some members of the community were still missing adding that the attack came less than 24 hours after the state commissioner of police and some officials of the directorate of state service visited the area.

Adanu who said residents had fled, urged adequate deployment of policemen and soldiers in the area to smoke out the criminal elements whom, he alleged, were still lurking in the area.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported the Kaduna state police command said it had gunned down three armed bandits among those that attacked Kakanji village in Birnin Gawri local government area.

The command public relations officer, Yakubu Sabo, who confirmed the incident in the state, however, said two policemen died in the attack.

Sabo disclosed that: “We received a distress call through DPO Randagi on April 6 at about 1900hrs that Armed men in large number entered Kakangi village of Birnin Gwari LGA, a neighbouring community to Niger state, shooting sporadically attacking the villagers.

“The combine teams of Police Mobile Force personnel, conventional Police and Vigilante were quickly mobilized to the village, engaged the bandits in fierce gun duel and successfully repelled the attack.''
