2019: Political parties, candidates must sign peace accord as Abubakar’s committee warns police, religious centres

- Some of the politicians want the police and religious bodies to shun activities that can cause tension ahead of the election

The national peace committee headed by former head of state, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has asked candidates and political parties in the country to ensure a peaceful general election in 2019 through their conducts while the exercise lasts.

The committee also wants political parties and their candidates to sign a peace accord and act in such a way as to guarantees national peace and security.

Speaking on Thursday, November 30, Abubakar whose committee presented a draft copy of the 2018 peace accord to political parties and their presidential candidates in Abuja, lamented that some politicians are currently parading themselves in ways that threaten peaceful elections in 2019.

Channels Television reports that Abubakar urged politicians in the country to scrutinise their conscience and act in the interest of the people they hope to lead.

Bishop of Sokoto diocese, Mattew Kukah, who presented a draft copy of the peace accord, explained its content saying there was need for political parties to campaign without insults and inciting statements.

The report said some leaders of political parties made their contributions with some stressing that non-political organisations like the police and religious houses should avoid acts capable of instigating violence during the elections.

Legit.ng earlier reported that a former Senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio, recently denied having any role in the crises that have recently engulfed Akwa Ibom state including the incident that happened at the House of Assembly on Tuesday, November 27.

In a statement by his special assistant on media, Aneite Ekong, Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom, said he was reacting because of the alleged spurious allegation that he had a role in the crises.
